Rotary Finger started off as an acoustic blend spanning different influences, ages, cultures and languages; a reworking of great classics and undiscovered contemporaries; a musical self-discovery.

When that self-discovery was put to the test, and they finally got out old recordings of melodies, chords, words, myriads of ideas waiting to be given a form, a sense, and most importantly a life, and brought them together, here’s what came about..

Formed after a chance encounter in Italy between Paolo La Ganga, guitar-strummer extraordinaire and Sonia Ter Hovanessian and her “chocolate-velvet” voice and flighting fluting fancies.

Their influences vary greatly, and in their music you can feel Paolo’s love for Blues and Jazz, Sonia’s passion for the power of words in Folk, wrapped up with a silver lining of flute…

Through their music, Paolo, (from Bologna, Italy), and Sonia, (French-Armenian originally from Brighton), tell the story of the coming together of their different cultures and languages, and how they found a common home and understanding in the universality of music.

Presenting Sonia Ter Hovanessian on voice and flute and Giannicola Spezzigu on double bass and electric bass.

The project is a jazz reinterpretation of a variety of music from different cultures: from Anglophone pop to la chanson Française and Italian classics; from traditional Sardinian music to Armenian folk music; from European classical music to original compositions.

A formation which shows off the two extremities of the spectrum of musical frequencies: the high register of the flute and female voice and the somber register of the bass. The interaction of the various instruments gives the impression that the duo is in fact, to all intents and purposes, a trio, while maintaining a minimalist simplicity in style.

Accomplished musicians with different artistic backgrounds manage to create an intricate mix which makes each performance unique. The distinctive trait of their concert is the intimate atmosphere they manage to create, both through their music and through their direct interaction with the audience. At times moving and thought-provoking, at times comical and cheerful; a concert which can be appreciated by all, the intrigued newbie and enthusiastic connoisseur alike.
